Taken from an email from Jacqueline Cartier, NPR Media Relations:

This I Believe, the NPR weekly series of personal essays from famous and everyday Americans on core values and beliefs, will feature an essay from Selma, Alabama resident and Wallace Community College English professor, Kendra Jones. Jones’s essay will be broadcast Monday, February 9 during the NPR newsmagazine All Things Considered, which airs weekdays from 3:00-5:30PM on WUAL 88.3 in Selma. All Things Considered is also available online at: www.npr.org/allthingsconsidered

In Jones essay, "Surviving Life's Tests," she credits her father for teaching her three traits that have seen her through life’s hardest moments. "I believe in toughness, steeliness, and even meanness." She continues with "when life has tested me the most," these traits have gotten her though. From work and even her father’s passing, on which she remarks that the "tough and steely will my father gave me helps me bear the loss of him."

Jones’s essay was selected from more than 55,000 submissions received to date from across the country. She joins an impressive list of essayists, including former Secretary of State Colin Powell; Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates; Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel; skateboarding pro Tony Hawk; activist Gloria Steinem; and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. In addition to airing on All Things Considered, Jones’s essay will be available to read or listen to at www.NPR.org, where all broadcast essays are archived.

This I Believe is based on the landmark 1950s program created by Edward R. Murrow. The new rendition, launched in April 2005, is a hit with listeners, reinforcing the public’s renewed interest in exploring beliefs and values. A new essay airs each week, alternating among the NPR newsmagazines All Things Considered, Weekend Edition and Tell Me More. The series is a collaboration between NPR and This I Believe, Inc., produced by Dan Gediman and Jay Allison, with John Gregory and Viki Merrick.
