When James Mitchell sought the presidency of Wall ace Community College Selma a decade ago, he figured his application wouldn't get much more than a cursory glance.

The North Carolina native had never been to Alabama and didn't have a clue about the school, which is named for a governor best known for his "segregation forever" inauguration speech.

But, as they say, nothing ventured, nothing gained. That's what Mitchell thought as he mailed his application.
