SELMA (Mar. 6, 2014) – Wallace Community College Selma held its Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society Induction Ceremony for its Alpha Eta Tau Chapter on Thursday, Feb. 27, at 6:30 p.m. in the Hank Sanders Technology Center on the WCCS campus. Daniel Liss; Co-Founder & CEO, Bama Covered provided the keynote address to the honorees. Mrs. Becky Davis and Mrs. Kerry Henderson both coordinated the event and are the advisors for Alpha Eta Tau.
The following students were inducted into Alpha Eta Tau: Caleb Autery, Casey Baggett, Shannon Baldwin, Ariana Bentley, Jessica Bickerstaff, Lashelle Cobb, Stuart Dawson, Leah Doss, Issac Edwards, Thomas Ferrell, Angela Fulgham, Nivory Gordon, III, Achandra Harrell, Sara Hogue, Sandrina Jackson, Jolessa McMickens, Kayla Mitchell, Marcus Moore, Sebrina Moore, Emilea Moultrie, Cullen Nickles, Hannah Sheffield, Nacol Smith, Jannie Thomas, Kamyra Turner, Hailey Wilkinson, and Sherronda Wilson.
PTK’s mission is to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming.
Today, PTK is the largest honor society in America in higher education with more than 1.3 million members and 1,200 chapters located in 50 United Sates, U.S. territories, Canada and Germany. In 1929, the American Association of Community Colleges recognized Phi Theta Kappa as the official honor society for two-year colleges. It is estimated that 200,000 students participate in the PTK program each year. Annually, more than 90,000 students are invited to PTK.
Membership is by invitation only and after a student has completed a minimum of 12 credit hours of associate degree course work and earned a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Students must maintain a high academic standing throughout their enrollment in the two-year college, generally a 3.25 GPA. The average age of a new member is 29, ranging from 18-80. Part-time and full-time students are eligible for membership.
