Black Belt Scholars STEM Summer Enrichment Campers Visit Wallace Community College Selma
SELMA, AL – Wallace Community College Selma (WCCS) was proud to host more than 250 middle and high school students today on its Selma campus as part of the Alabama Black Belt Scholars STEM Camp, now in its fifth year.
This four-week summer enrichment experience serves students in grades 7–12 from Greene, Sumter, Hale, Perry, and Tuscaloosa counties. Free of charge to all participants, the camp is designed to increase awareness, excitement, and readiness for careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
While on campus, students engaged in a variety of hands-on learning sessions, including math and science labs, chemistry demonstrations, welding technology, industrial maintenance, and aviation career exploration. They also participated in interactive activities, including drone flight simulation, agricultural extension education, and drafting and design technology. These sessions provided campers with real-world insight into high-demand career fields while reinforcing critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
The camp also includes off-campus visits to historic landmarks, museums, and higher education institutions, giving students broader exposure to Alabama’s cultural and educational resources.
This initiative is supported by Mr. Llevelyn Rhone, Alabama Community College System (ACCS) Board Member representing Congressional District 7, State Senator Bobby Singleton representing District 24, and Judge Marvin Wiggins.
Rhone shared, “The camp’s goals are to promote awareness of resources and exposure to education and career opportunities that are very close to the students. We also want to create career and life options that are aligned with the ACCS mission and remain focused on the needs of the community.”
Senator Singleton, camp founder, added, “Our mission is to increase excitement and knowledge in STEM for youth in the Black Belt, especially in populations underrepresented in the STEM workforce. We are passionate about providing students with stimulating and challenging 'hands-on, mind-on' STEM experiences and activities.”
Now in its fifth year, the Alabama Black Belt Scholars STEM Camp continues to grow, inspiring a new generation of leaders and innovators across the region.
