Wallace Community College Selma Celebrates 408 Graduates at 61st Commencement Ceremony; Honors President Mitchell’s Final Graduation

Selma, AL—Wallace Community College Selma (WCCS) proudly marked a historic milestone on Friday, May 9. The college celebrated its 61st Commencement Ceremony and honored the achievements of 408 graduates, bringing the College’s all-time total to 17,386 alumni.

In response to inclement weather, the College hosted two ceremonies at its main campus on Earl Goodwin Parkway: Academic Programs at 10:00 a.m. and Technical Programs at 1:00 p.m.. Both ceremonies were filled with energy, emotion, and reflection as graduates crossed the stage in front of proud families, friends, faculty, and staff.

This year’s commencement was particularly meaningful as it marked the final graduation ceremony for President Dr. James M. Mitchell, who will retire after over two decades of visionary leadership. Dr. Mitchell told the audience about growth, perseverance, and legacy.

“Graduation is more than a ceremony—it is a turning point,” said Dr. Mitchell. “I have been honored to serve the students of WCCS, and I will always carry their determination and success in my heart.”

Several outstanding students were honored for academic achievement and leadership:

  • Ka’Sharee Wilson and Chandler Tyler received the Academic Excellence Award for maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Ka'Sharee, a dual-enrolled student, has exemplified academic rigor and balance beyond her years.
  • Sydney Pritchett and Jaquiatta Posey were named recipients of the James M. Mitchell Award, which recognizes students who exemplify leadership, service, and excellence. Sydney is also a dual-enrolled student whose impact reaches well beyond the classroom.

Graduates represented a wide range of fields, including nursing, welding, cosmetology, business administration, industrial maintenance, and liberal arts. Hundreds of supporters tuned in via live stream to join the celebration remotely.

WCCS continues its mission of transforming lives and communities through accessible, high-quality education, and the Class of 2025 stands as a powerful reminder of the College’s lasting impact.
