SELMA, Ala. — Students in Wallace Community College Selma’s welding program welcomed James “Nick” Salvato for a discussion about careers in welding and pipefitting and opportunities available through the United Association (UA).
Salvato represents South Central Pipe Trades, which serves Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. An 11-year member of UA Local 52 in Montgomery, he now serves as an organizer for Local 52 and Local 119 in Mobile.
During the visit, Salvato shared paycheck examples and discussed wages, benefits, training, and career paths available throughout the industry. His presentation gave students a firsthand look at how their welding skills can translate into long-term careers.
The visit was arranged by welding instructor Antonio Brown, a longtime friend and fellow Local 52 member. Brown is among the Wallace Selma welding program graduates who have gone on to become members of the
two locals.

Both Local 52 and Local 119 have longstanding relationships with Wallace Selma. Salvato hopes to strengthen those connections by helping more students explore opportunities in the pipe trades and connecting graduates with workforce needs across the country.
